Facebook and Co-Creation hub in partnership launched NG_HUB in the month of May, as part of its commitment and ongoing investment in Africa to support software developers and technology entrepreneurs.
Mark Zuckerberg sure keeps his promises as this was one of the benefits of the partnership discussed towards the end of 2017. Details here. With this development, we should start seeing the impact pretty soon as was projected.
The event was held at the International Students Centre Conference Hall at the University of Port Harcourt on the 30th of May 2018 and witnessed an impressive turnout.
Members of the team sensitized the audience about what they hope to achieve with NG_hub as well as supplied details about what the FbStart Accelerator program was all about. There after, there was a breakout session consisting of 5 groups with focus on Deep Tech such as Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning, Data Science, Internet of Things, Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) where participants talked about ideas utilizing any of these technologies to solve problems in their community.
I spoke with Kendra Nnachi (Startup & Developer Programs Manager Facebook, Nigeria). She was very enthusiastic about the event and said she looks forward to the solutions that would be brought forward. They will be on the road for the next three weeks visiting other Universities in different states. Other members of the team include; Francis Sani (Project Manager Acceleration, CChub) and Desiree Craig (Head of Product CChub)
The event also had in attendance the likes of Gino Osahon (Centre Manager, Ken Saro-Wiwa Innovation Hub) Esther Smart, (Girls code club) Esther Itolimina, (Lead Women Tech makers, Port-Harcourt) Gabriel Eze (Founder, Touchabl) and other notable tech enthusiast and tech stakeholders in Port-Harcourt.
From the conversation, one thing is sure, NG_HUB is looking for smart ideas that would add value, solve relevant localized problems and bring about a revolution in the Nigerian Tech Space.
